The area that forms this modern day city was actually the first region permanently settled by Europeans in the state of Utah. This all began back in 1846, and a year later Fort Buenaventura was actually purchased by Mormon settlers for the princely sum of $1,950. The first name for the area was Brownsville, after Captain James Brown. The name of the city we know today was given out of respect for Peter Skene. He was a brigade leader for Hudson’s Bay Company.

This city has long been the second largest city in the state of Utah. Because of its great history, the area has many historic buildings that still stand. While several suburbs of Salt Lake City and Provo have more residents, this area still holds great prominence throughout the state.

Things to Do

There is so much to do see and do in this region of the state that you and your family will have no trouble finding things to do each weekend. Naturally, the city is home to some great ski resorts. You can go to the snow basin much of the year and participate in a variety of skiing and snowboarding related activities. The powder is almost always fresh, and there are some great adventures waiting all who go there. There is also Mount Ogden to visit. This is a great place to go in the spring and summer months as there are a number of hiking trails to explore. The views are absolutely breathtaking.

As you live in the area, you will want to visit the George S. Eccles Dinosaur park time and time again. This is five complete areas of replica dinosaur and reptile activities that will keep the entire family entertained for hours, while all providing a great educational opportunity for all. Another adventurous activity to participate in is found at Waterfall Canyon Trail. This is a great place for novice and skilled hikers to go. The trail is beautiful and serene year round. Just remember to wear some good hiking shoes and bring plenty of water!
