Located in between the mountains to the east and the Great Salt Lake to the west, this small Utah city is located about 16 miles north of Salt Lake City. It was ranked 12th on Money magazine’s list of the “Best Places to Live” for 2011. Places of Interest
Station Park, an outdoor shopping center with a show fountain and park, is a popular place for residents to hang out, shop, and dine. The shopping center also features an outdoor ice skating rink, which is open in the winter time. It’s easy accessible to residents via the Front Runner, a commuter rail service that operates in town and connects the community to Salt Lake City and Provo. In fact, at the Provo station, travelers can catch Amtrak’s California Zephyr that goes as far east as Chicago.
Oakridge Country Club and golf course are another of the small city’s attractions. Oakridge 18-hole golf course was established in 1957. Historic landmarks include Lagoon Amusement Park and the S&S Shortline Railroad Park & Museum.
Lagoon Amusement Park is the largest theme park in the state. It includes a zoo and rides, including many kiddie rides, roller coasters, and water rides. Visitors come for the water park in the summer, and the attraction is also popular at Halloween. The historic amusement park began as a resort in 1896; it once extended to the shores of the Great Salt Lake, although it was moved to its present location in the late 1890s.
The S&S Shortline Railroad Park & Museum allows visitors see more than 90 railroad engines and cars. A museum is located inside a replica freight station in the style of the 1920s, and the attraction also includes a picnic grounds and a miniature golf course. The railroad was an important part of the town’s history since the Utah Central Railroad first arrived in 1870.
The city also has more than 146 miles of trails. With streams that crisscross the town as they flow from the canyon into the Great Salt Lake, the city attracts residents who enjoy hiking, jogging, fishing, camping, horseback riding, and other outdoor activities. The Davis County Fairgrounds in West Farmington has facilities for horseback riding and rodeo.
